  Don't Stop The Music
Entertainment Brings In Record Amount of People

Ribs, Music, and entertainment all helped as Sunday came to an end of a four-day Ribfest weekend.

“At this moment in time we do not know exact numbers,” said Walter Johnson, Ribfest Board of Directors. “However, we do think this is going to be a record year.”

Representatives feel the mild weather had something to do with such high numbers.

“When the weather is hot, people don’t want to be out, but with such nice weather people eat more, they drink more,” said Johnson.

Matt Kaley, Entertainment Chairman, says even though the weather was nice, it was the entertainment that brought in festival goers this year.

“The entertainment is the most important thing. You can call it a rib festival, but what really drives the people and the money in is entertainment,” Kaley said.

This year’s main stage entertainment held up its end of the bargain. From Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon, Joan Jett and Country’s Trace Atkin’s, attendees of all ages found something to enjoy.

“It’s all about who will pull in the biggest crowd when choosing artists,” said Kaley. “It’s about raising money to prevent child abuse so it’s sheer numbers.”

The Exchange Club tries to choose a wide variety when booking entertainment. Last year Heart and Randy Travis were headliners. This year boasted 80’s rock to country. Although Trace isn’t the first, representatives say they need to be cautious about country music in this area.

“County is a hit or miss in this area,” Kaley. “But Trace has a crossover appeal, he is on top of his game and will attract many people.”

As for the second stage, Stage Manager Eric Jungnickle had a tricky task of matching the artists on the main stage. “We were packed all three days and hope to be again [Sunday].”

His smaller known bands may not have attracted as many people as the main stage, but it definitely filled its grounds as well.

Kaley is already working on next years Ribfest talent.

“I can guarantee you Heartsfield will be here. Since they’ve been here every year.” Kaley. “I can only tell you that we’ve always done well and will do well again next year.”
